Healing from the Inside Out: Mental Health, Self-Care, and Renewal.
Share
Hi beautiful souls,
I hope this message finds you well. I know it’s been a while since I last checked in. As life gets busy, especially for us as Black women, it can be easy to put everyone else’s needs first. But sometimes life sends us gentle (or not-so-gentle) reminders that we, too, need rest, healing, and space to reset.
This summer, I unknowingly began a healing journey. My family and I visited Costa Rica for the first time, a place that opened my heart in ways I didn’t expect. Since then, I’ve started working on my mental health by going to therapy—a step I’ve been scared to take for years. I’ve also begun physical therapy for the neck and shoulder pain I developed from years of overwork and stress. These moments of care, both mentally and physically, are starting to teach me how essential healing is—especially for women like us.
This month, I want to share some insights on why caring for your mental health is so important, how it can help you heal, and the power of taking time off when your soul feels drained.
5 Reasons to Prioritize Your Mental Health for Healing
-
Healing Requires Stillness
When we are constantly “on,” our bodies and minds never get the chance to truly rest. Mental health care—whether through therapy, mindfulness, or journaling—helps us pause long enough to hear what our inner self is trying to say. -
Reduces Physical Tension and Stress
Emotional stress doesn’t just live in the mind—it also shows up in the body. I’ve learned firsthand how years of unprocessed stress can accumulate as physical pain in the neck, shoulders, or back. Mental healing can help us release tension and give our bodies space to recover. -
Improves Emotional Resilience
Life will always throw challenges our way. But when we take care of our mental well-being, we become more emotionally resilient and able to handle life’s difficulties with grace. Affirmations, therapy, and moments of rest can help us build this resilience. -
Sets the Example for Those Around Us
As Black women, we carry a lot on our shoulders—often for our families, workplaces, and communities. Taking care of your mental health can inspire those around you to do the same. When we choose to prioritize healing, we break generational cycles of burnout and neglect. -
Aligns You with Your Purpose
Sometimes, when life feels heavy, it’s a sign that we need to realign with what truly fulfills us. Mental clarity allows us to reconnect with our purpose and passions—whether that means launching a creative business, nurturing relationships, or simply enjoying life more deeply.
The Benefits of Taking a Sabbatical (Even if It’s a Dream for Now)
I’ve realized that sometimes healing requires more than a few hours on the weekend—it requires a complete pause. I dream of taking a 6-month to 1-year sabbatical, a break that would allow me to heal fully, spend time with my family, and pour more love into my skincare business. If you’ve ever thought about taking a sabbatical, even just for a month, here are some of the benefits:
- Restores Energy and Prevents Burnout: You get to step off the treadmill of life and reconnect with yourself.
- Boosts Creativity: Time away helps your mind wander, which can lead to new ideas and creative solutions.
- Strengthens Relationships: You have more time and presence to invest in meaningful connections.
- Allows Space for Reflection: Stepping away gives you clarity on what’s important and what no longer serves you.
- Brings You Back Refreshed and Renewed: Whether you return to work or choose a new path, a sabbatical can offer a sense of renewal.
A Note on Balancing a Business and Day Job
I know how exhausting it can be to manage a full-time job while nurturing a passion project. It’s not easy. Some days I feel so tired that I barely have the energy to connect with my customers—the people I started my skincare business for in the first place. My dream is to one day focus on this business full-time so I can offer more value and support to each of you.
In the meantime, I’m working on balancing rest and action. If you’re in a similar boat, my advice is this:
- Be kind to yourself. It’s okay to move slowly.
- Communicate when you need to, even if it’s just a small check-in.
- Trust that your journey is unfolding as it should.
Affirmations for Mental and Emotional Healing
Here are a few affirmations that have helped me, and I hope they resonate with you too:
- I give myself permission to rest.
- I am worthy of healing and joy.
- I release the need to carry burdens that aren’t mine.
- My peace is non-negotiable.
- I am allowed to grow at my own pace.
